1 General Safety Rules

The Finnish Sauna is a safe device when used correctly. It is essential to follow safety rules to prevent health risks and damage to the appliance.

1.1 Fundamental Rules

  • NEVER leave the sauna on unattended
  • Do not use the sauna under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Do not exceed 20 minutes of continuous stay
  • Do not use in case of fever or illness
  • Never touch the heater or stones when hot
  • Do not cover or obstruct ventilation openings
  • Do not bring flammable materials inside
  • Do not use electrical devices inside (phones, tablets, etc.)

1.2 Warning Signs - When to Exit Immediately

Immediately stop the sauna session and exit if you experience any of these symptoms:

WARNING: If symptoms persist after 10-15 minutes of rest, contact a doctor or emergency room.

1.3 Preparation Before Use

Before each sauna session:

  1. Hydration: Drink 250-500ml of water 30 minutes before
  2. Meal: Avoid heavy meals, wait at least 1-2 hours for digestion
  3. Personal hygiene: Lukewarm shower, remove jewelry, watches, glasses
  4. Clothing: Naked or with swimsuit, never dressed
  5. Drying: Dry completely before entering
  6. Temperature check: Verify it is appropriate to your tolerance

2 Electrical Safety

2.1 Electrical System Requirements

The electrical system must strictly comply with safety standards:

2.2 Mandatory Periodic Inspections

  • Monthly: Visual inspection of cables, plugs, terminals for signs of overheating or damage
  • Biannual: Test of residual current device by pressing "T" button
  • Annual: Inspection by qualified electrician of system, grounding, protections
  • Every 5 years: Complete system verification according to CEI 64-8 standard

DANGER: Never work on the electrical system without disconnecting power from the main panel. Only qualified personnel can perform repairs.

2.4 Safety Distances from Heater

Always maintain the following minimum distances from the heater:

WARNING: Never place towels or other objects on the heater or in its immediate vicinity. Fire hazard.

3 Safe Water Use

3.1 Rules for Pouring Water

Water on stones creates instant steam at very high temperature. Follow these rules:

  1. Limited quantity: Maximum 2 ladles (300ml) at a time
  2. Safe distance: Stay away from heater when pouring
  3. Controlled pouring: Pour slowly, do not throw violently
  4. Direction: Pour in center of stones, not on edges or heating elements
  5. Waiting: Wait at least 5 minutes between pours
  6. Never directly on heating elements: Can cause thermal shock and breakage

DANGER: Generated steam instantly reaches 100°C or more. Keep face and hands away from immediate steam area.

3.2 Water and Electrical Components

  • Never pour water on control panel
  • Never pour water on electrical cables
  • Do not touch electrical components with wet hands
  • Do not wash inside of heater with water
  • Do not use electric vaporizers or nebulizers

WARNING: In case of burn, immediately cool the area with cold running water for 10-15 minutes. If severe, consult doctor.

4 Safety for Children and Elderly

4.1 Children

Children can use the sauna only with strict precautions:

Rules for Children (7-12 years):

  • Always with supervision of responsible adult
  • Maximum temperature 60-70°C (never above 75°C)
  • Maximum duration 5-8 minutes (never beyond 10 minutes)
  • Position on lower bench (coolest area)
  • Educate not to touch heater and not to pour water
  • Exit immediately if child shows discomfort
  • Mandatory hydration before and after
  • Prior pediatric consultation in case of pathologies

DANGER: Never leave children unattended in sauna, not even for a few seconds. Risk of burns, dehydration, loss of consciousness.

4.2 Elderly

Elderly can use the sauna but with specific cautions:

  • ✓ Prior medical consultation, especially if over 70 or with pathologies
  • ✓ Controlled and stable blood pressure
  • ✓ Absence of cardiac pathologies or cardiologist consultation
  • ✓ Reduced temperature: 65-80°C (avoid higher temperatures)
  • ✓ Limited duration: 8-12 minutes maximum
  • ✓ Presence of another person nearby
  • ✓ Avoid thermal shocks (gradual cooling)
  • ✓ Abundant hydration

Specific Contraindications for Elderly:

  • Uncontrolled cardiovascular pathologies
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Heart failure
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Severe hypotension
  • Recent history of stroke or TIA
  • Uncompensated diabetes
  • Kidney failure

WARNING: Elderly have reduced thermoregulation capacity and perception of discomfort. Special attention to symptoms of illness.

5 Specific Medical Contraindications

5.1 Absolute Contraindications

5.2 Relative Contraindications (Consult Doctor)

  • Arterial hypertension (even if controlled by drugs)
  • Hypotension
  • Diabetes mellitus (type 1 or 2)
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Chronic respiratory diseases
  • Kidney failure
  • Thyroid diseases
  • Severe varicose veins
  • Dermatitis or psoriasis in acute phase
  • Taking drugs that alter thermoregulation
  • Chemotherapy or radiotherapy in progress
  • Pregnancy (even second trimester)

5.3 Drug Interactions

Some drugs can interfere with thermoregulation:

5.4 Alcohol and Substances

ABSOLUTE PROHIBITION to use sauna under the influence of:

  • Alcohol: Increases risk of severe dehydration, hypotension, loss of consciousness, death
  • Drugs: Alter perception, thermoregulation, risk of collapse
  • Sedative drugs: Reduce alertness, risk of not perceiving illness

6 Emergencies and First Aid

6.1 Fainting in Sauna

Emergency Procedure:

  1. Immediately turn off heater
  2. Fully open door
  3. If possible, transport person outside to cool environment
  4. Lay down with legs elevated 30 cm
  5. Loosen tight clothing
  6. If conscious, give water in small sips
  7. If unconscious, check breathing and immediately call 118
  8. If not breathing, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  9. Never leave person alone until arrival of rescuers

6.2 Heat Stroke

Symptoms:

  • Body temperature >40°C
  • Hot and dry skin (sweating absent)
  • Mental confusion
  • Rapid and shallow breathing
  • Rapid and weak pulse
  • Possible loss of consciousness

Intervention:

  1. Immediately call 118
  2. Move to cool environment
  3. Cool gradually with damp cloths (not ice)
  4. If conscious, give cool water to drink
  5. Ventilate
  6. Monitor constantly until arrival of rescuers

DANGER: Heat stroke is a potentially fatal medical emergency. Do not underestimate.

6.3 Fire

Procedure:

  1. Immediately evacuate all occupants
  2. Disconnect power from main panel if possible to do safely
  3. Close sauna door to limit oxygen
  4. Call fire department (115)
  5. If small and controllable fire, use CO2 or powder extinguisher (NEVER water on electrical parts)
  6. If fire spreads, evacuate building

WARNING: Always keep an appropriate extinguisher (class ABC or CO2) near the sauna.
