1 Routine Cleaning

Regular sauna cleaning is essential to keep it hygienic, functional, and preserve the wood over time. Routine cleaning operations can be performed weekly and do not require much effort. Cleaning and disinfection of the sauna cabin require weekly frequency, to be intensified if the sauna in question is for public use.

1.1 Wood Cleaning

Sauna wood is natural and porous, so it requires special attention:

• Always ventilate the cabin after use by opening the door for 30-60 minutes
• Dry any water drops on the walls with a dry cloth
• Never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or scented detergents
• For surface stains, use only lukewarm water and neutral soap
• Pass a slightly damp microfiber cloth on the walls
• Dry immediately with a dry cloth

WARNING: The use of chemical products is absolutely discouraged as they could release harmful fumes at high operating temperatures.

NOTE: Sauna wood naturally develops a golden patina over time. This is not a defect but a natural process indicating correct use. The wood may darken over time.

1.2 Bench Cleaning

Benches are the part most subject to contact with body and sweat. You can proceed with a cloth or sponge soaked in water, cleaning the wood surfaces well, but especially the benches:

1. After each use, wipe with a dry cloth to remove sweat
2. Once a week, wash with a cloth or sponge soaked in lukewarm water
3. Rub gently following the wood grain
4. Dry completely with a dry cloth
5. Leave to air with the door open

Special oils are suitable for cleaning benches, to be applied in the direction of the grain. Paraffin oil provides a regenerating effect on the wood (periodic maintenance treatment).

WARNING: Never sit directly on benches without a towel. Using a towel protects the wood and ensures hygiene.

1.3 Floor Cleaning

The sauna floor requires regular cleaning to prevent dirt buildup:

• Sweep or vacuum weekly to remove dust and debris
• Wash with water and neutral detergent every 2 weeks
• Use a well-wrung mop to avoid excess water
• Dry with a cloth or let dry with the door open
• Verify that water stagnation does not occur

1.4 Periodic Complete Cleaning

Periodically it is recommended to clean not only the walls and floors, but also the ceilings, to ensure the healthiness of the entire environment. It is possible to purchase special cleaning kits, which are usually carried out with water-based sanitizing products specific for wood.

NOTE: Specific detergents or kits for more complete sanitization and care of the Finnish Sauna are available on the market.

2 Periodic Maintenance

Operations to be performed monthly or every 50 hours of use to ensure sauna efficiency and safety.

2.1 Lava Stone Inspection

Lava stones are subject to thermal stress and must be checked regularly. It is advisable to check them regularly to ensure they are still in good condition and replace them if necessary:

Stone Cleaning Procedure:

1. Turn off the heater and wait for complete cooling (at least 2 hours)
2. Remove all stones from the heater
3. Inspect each stone individually
4. Discard broken, chipped, or very dirty stones
5. Wash intact stones with running water
6. Let dry completely (24 hours)
7. Reposition according to installation layout (large stones at bottom, small ones on top)
8. Add new stones if necessary

WARNING: Never use stones not specific for sauna. Only certified lava stones resistant to thermal shock.

2.2 Heater Maintenance

Periodically cleaning the heater and stones from any limescale residues or impurities ensures optimal efficiency.

2.3 Electrical Cable Inspection

Visual check of the condition of the heater electrical connections:

• Inspect cables entering the heater for signs of overheating
• Verify that there are no loose or oxidized cables
• Check that sheaths are intact without cuts or abrasions
• Verify terminal tightening (only if you are a qualified electrician)
• Check that there are no burnt or melted plastic odors

DANGER: For any intervention on electrical connections, always turn off the main switch and contact a qualified electrician. Never touch cables with the heater powered.

2.4 Screw and Fastener Tightening

Sauna wood is subject to thermal expansion that can loosen fasteners:

Use appropriate screwdriver and tighten gently without forcing to avoid splitting the wood.

3 Annual Maintenance

Operations to be performed once a year, every two years, or every 200-300 hours of use, preferably before the peak usage season.

3.1 Complete Lava Stone Replacement

Even if apparently intact, stones lose thermal efficiency over time and must be completely replaced. According to sources, the recommended replacement frequency is:

• Replacing the lava stones of the Finnish Sauna heater is an operation to be done on average every 2 years

An indicator parameter that the stones are exhausted and need to be replaced is the presence of crumbled parts inside the heater.

Replacement Procedure:

1. Turn off heater and disconnect power from electrical panel
2. Wait for complete cooling (minimum 4 hours)
3. Remove all old stones
4. Clean heater grate from dust and residues with brush or vacuum cleaner
5. Visually inspect heating elements condition (do not touch)
6. Wash and dry new stones before insertion to eliminate any debris
7. Let new stones dry 24-48 hours
8. New stones must be inserted starting from the flattest ones that will be placed between the heating elements without forcing, then move to the rounded ones, creating layers to protect the heating elements
9. Arrange stones so that air can circulate and pressure is distributed on the stones themselves and not on the heating elements

NOTE: Old stones can be disposed of as inert waste or reused for garden decoration.

3.2 Wood Treatment

It is recommended to treat the structure every 2-3 years with specific oil.

For outdoor saunas, regularly apply an impregnating agent or protective oil with UV filter. It is important to wash periodically with low-pressure water and, from time to time, apply specific wood products to revive its essence.

3.3 General Heater Inspection

In-depth inspection of the electric heater condition:

• Heating elements: Visual inspection for oxidation, breaks, support detachment (only with cold and disconnected heater)
• Thermostat: Operation test, temperature accuracy
• Timer: Verify correct operation and automatic shutdown
• Safety thermostat: Presence and integrity
• Heater body: Absence of rust, deformations, cracks
• Support: Stability and leveling

WARNING: This inspection must be performed by a qualified technician if anomalies are noticed. For thorough inspections contact authorized service.

3.4 Insulation and Ventilation Inspection

Verification of thermal efficiency and natural ventilation system:

1. Start the heater and set the desired temperature
2. Verify heating time (compare with model standard times)
3. Check that temperature remains stable
4. Verify absence of dispersions from joints

If heating time has increased by 30% compared to initial values, check insulation and seals.

4 Aesthetic Problems and Solutions

4.1 Blackened Wood

Wood blackening near the heater is normal, but can be managed:

Causes:

• Prolonged exposure to high temperatures
• Repeated water vapor
• Natural wood oxidation

Solutions:

1. Cleaning with soft brush and water
2. If very dark, sand gently with 120-150 grit sandpaper
3. Remove dust with damp cloth
4. Let dry completely
5. Do not apply varnishes or impregnating agents (they release toxic substances when heated)

NOTE: Slight wood darkening is normal and does not compromise functionality or safety.

4.2 Resin Leakage

Natural wood resin can leak out with heat, especially during the first uses:

How to Remove It:

• Wait for the sauna to be cold
• Remove solid resin drops with wooden or plastic spatula
• Clean residues with denatured alcohol on cloth
• Wash with water and neutral soap
• Dry completely

Resin leakage naturally decreases after the first months of use.

4.3 Burnt Smell at First Ignition

During the first 2-3 ignitions it is normal to perceive smell of:

• Protective paint on the heater that is stabilizing
• Residual dust on heating elements
• Wood resin that volatilizes

First Ignition Procedure:

1. Turn on heater at medium temperature (70-80°C)
2. Keep door open and environment well ventilated
3. Let run for 30-45 minutes
4. Repeat 2-3 times before first actual use

WARNING: If burnt smell persists after 5-6 uses or is accompanied by smoke, turn off immediately and contact technical service.
